Why do we need color in films and movies when in the 19th century there were only black and white films in which the whole family would squeeze itself in front of the movie and laugh along the funny jokes and scenes. But then why do we need colors in today times of film.
Lets start by saying that colors don't only serve the purpose of entertaining someone but also has many different roles.:
- Colors help to simplify complex stories
- Colors help to evoke a sense of emotion in the audience while watching the film.
- They help to set a tone of the scene before the character has even uttered a word.
- A characters journey can be portrayed through the medium of colors.
- Colors can communicate the basic film idea.
There are many different color schemes that director and the editor has choose from to suit the movie plot or the idea. These color schemes are:
- Complementary Colors
Complementary colors are opposite hues on the color wheel. In the basic form, they are one primary color and one secondary color that is created by mixing two primaries.
- Analogous Colors
Analogous colors are three colors next to each other in a color wheel, composed of one dominant color (usually a primary or a secondary color), then a supporting color (a secondary or a tertiary color) and a third color which is used for mixing the two first colors or an accent color that pops.
- Triadic Colors
A triadic color scheme is comprised of three colors which are evenly spaced on the color wheel.
- Monochromatic Colors
Monochromatic color schemes are derived from a single base hue and extended using tints, shades and tones. Tints are achieved by adding whits colors and shades and tones are achieved by adding darker colors, black or grey.
